04

Disaster Management & Emergency Preparedness Course

is an innovative course on crisis, disaster and emergency management. This comprehensive training looks at emerging themes in disaster management from a humanitarian perspective.

Adepts will learn about humanitarian principles, incident command systems, hazards and vulnerabilities, disaster risk reduction and disaster response and recovery. With a broad curriculum covering key concepts and practical skills, this course prepares students to meet the complex challenges of emergency and disaster management.

Disaster management has evolved into an interdisciplinary field that draws on decades of experience in disaster response. While early disaster research focused on natural hazards, the scope of the field now includes man-made disasters, complex emergencies and crises. The effects of globalisation - competition for resources, displacement, forced migration, conflict, environmental refugees - have introduced new complexities, expanding the scope of disaster management.

This integrated programme defines humanitarian response through a development framework that includes vulnerability reduction and disaster risk mitigation as integral components. The programme recognises the increased vulnerability and disproportionate impact of disasters experienced by marginalised populations in developing countries. The programme's examination of disaster preparedness, response and recovery will be rooted in equity, justice and inclusion.

The course comprehensively covers all stages of disaster management, including pre-disaster preparation and mitigation, rescue and relief during a disaster, and rehabilitation, reconstruction and post-disaster recovery.
